Star South African batsman Rassie van der Dussen on Thursday announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket.

The 37-year-old called time on his Proteas career after playing 71 ODIs, 57 T20Is and 18 Tests.

Van der Dussen’s decision comes a couple of days after Cricket South Africa (CSA) named its list of contracted players for the 2026/27 season, with Van der Dussen’s name a notable absentee.

Van der Dussen confirmed the news in an emotional post on social media platform X.

“It is with a proud heart and a profound sense of gratitude that I announce my retirement from international cricket.

“To wear the Proteas jersey is a feat that demands a level of resilience and dedication that both tests and rewards you in the most incredible way. To have played for my country had been the greatest honour of my life,” he wrote.

Van der Dussen’s last T20I for South Africa was against Australia in Cairns on 16 August 2025 and his last ODI was against New Zealand in Lahore on 5 March 2025.

He averaged 50.13 in ODIs at a strike rate of 87.02, and 33.47 in T20Is at a strike rate of 128.75.

His Test career never really kicked off - he averaged 30.16 and last played a Test against Australia in Brisbane in December 2022.

Van der Dussen will continue playing franchise cricket. Provincially, he represents the Lions and he plays for MI Cape Town in the SA20.

“I owe a massive debt of gratitude to the Lions, and specifically to Lions’ current and former chief executive officers, Jono Leaf-Wright and Greg Fredericks,” Van der Dussen added.

“Your unwavering backing and support over the years provided the foundation upon which my international career was built. You believed in me when the road was long, and for that, I will always be grateful.

“Thank you to Cricket South Africa, Enoch Nkwe, and all the Proteas coaches and managers throughout the years for affording me the platform to wear the Proteas jersey.”

Van der Dussen also boasts Indian Premier League (IPL) experience for the Rajasthan Royals in 2022 and he has featured in the Pakistan Premier League (PLS) for Islamabad United (2023, 2025) and Lahore Qalanders (2024).

Van der Dussen, who has not retired from domestic cricket, will be contracted by the Lions for the 2026-27 season.
