K. Bhagyaraj, a renowned multifaceted Tamil filmmaker who also worked as an actor, producer, and composer, died on Saturday (June 27, 2026), aged 73, following a heart attack at Apollo Hospital.

Sources said he suffered a massive heart attack and was rushed to Apollo Hospital. Efforts were made to resuscitate him, but they proved futile.

Earlier this year, Mr. Bhagyaraj celebrated 50 years in cinema on the occasion of his 73rd birthday.

He is survived by his wife, Poornima Bhagyaraj, and their children, actor Shanthanu and Saranya Bhagyaraj.

He began his film career as an assistant director to veteran Tamil filmmaker Bharathiraja, who passed away earlier this month, on the 1977 film 16 Vayathinile.

    Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) chief coordinator Seeman said: “Bhagyaraj was an encyclopedia in screenplay. The films he took, the subjects he touched upon, his screenplay was welcomed by audience. Bhagyaraj was the first student of the legendary director K. Bharathiraja and he gave several hit films and touched phenomenal heights. His passing came as a huge shock.”

    Founder president of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi Thol Thirumavalavan said: “He had the pride of being the foremost student of the veteran director K. Bharathiraja. He was one of the towering figures in the world of cinema. AIADMK founder and former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran referred to him as his “film heir” (or kalai ulaga vaarisu). He earned the reputation of being one of the finest screenplay writers. Many would look forward to his films.”

    Actors pay homage

    Actor Rajnikanth paid homage at Bhagyaraj’s residence. Director Mani Ratnam, actors Radhika, Prabhu, Goundamani, Ramarajan, Arjun, Jayaram paid their respects to the mortal remains of the veteran filmmaker. Actor Mammootty posted heartfelt condolences on X.

    Actor Rajinikanth said: “For fifty years, in the Tamil film industry, through his extraordinary talent and creativity, he has given many successful films and earned an indelible place in the hearts of Tamil people. His sudden passing has caused immense sorrow and shock. My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. May his soul find peace.”

    Actors Nasser, Sathyaraj and director Lokesh Kanagaraj came also paid their respects.

    Social media filled with tributes to the filmmaker

    Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs L Murugan said: “The passing of Mr. K. Bhagyaraj, the pioneer director of the Tamil film world, an outstanding actor, a unique screenwriter, and a writer, brings immense sorrow.

    Having recently completed his 50-year landmark journey in the film industry and being specially praised by members of the film world and fans alike, his demise is an irreplaceable loss to the Tamil film industry.”

    Politician K. Annamalai posted on X, “The news of the passing away of Mr. K. Bhagyaraj, a great director, actor and one of the greatest screenwriters in India, due to ill health, is deeply shocking and saddening. He had won the love of the people of Tamil Nadu through his films. He was a simple and kind man. I express my deepest condolences to Mr. Bhagyaraj’s family and relatives. I pray to God that his soul may rest in peace.”

    The general secretary of the All India Puratchi Thalaivar Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AIPTMMK), V.K. Sasikala, in a message, pointed out that Bhagyaraj had bagged several awards including the life time achievement award and “Filmfare” award. Besides being an “ardent fan” of M.G, Ramachandran. Bhagyaraj had respect for Jayalalithaa, Ms. Sasikala said, remembering the period in which he and she were in politics together.

    D. Ravikumar, MP, said: “The news of the passing of actor and director Bhagyaraj due to a heart attack has come as a shock. Even in films made primarily for commercial entertainment, he consistently conveyed ideas that encouraged social reform. Death has snatched him away suddenly. The void created by his passing in Tamil cinema can never truly be filled.”

    Actor Harish Kalyan said: “Bhagyaraj’s films and his writing will live on in our hearts forever. His legacy of brilliant films and unforgettable performances will continue to guide and inspire us forever.”

    Actor Suhasini said: “He happily attended actor Khushbu’s daughter’s wedding in Goa. He was very happy. This morning, after returning home from his regular walk, he complained of mild chest pain. He was rushed to the hospital, but passed away.”

    Venkatesh Daggubati said, “Deeply saddened by the passing of Bhagyaraj Sir. His work transcended languages and touched the hearts of millions. I feel fortunate to have been a part of films like Sundarakanda and Abbaigaru, which were born from his remarkable storytelling. Indian cinema has lost one of its finest filmmakers. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and countless admirers.”

    Film producer G. Dhananjheyan said: “Deeply shocked and devastated to know the sudden demise of legendary Screenplay writer & Director #KBhagyaraj sir, my great friend & support in the film industry for many years. Couldn’t believe this happened so soon.”

    Choreographer, actor and director Raghava Lawrence said that he was deeply saddened by the demise of director Bhagyaraj. “His contribution to cinema is unforgettable, and his work has inspired generations. This is a great loss to the film industry,” he said.

    Actor Sibi Sathyaraj said the king of screenplay is no more. “Deeply saddened to hear about the sudden demise of K. Bhagyaraj sir. A huge loss to the film industry. My deepest condolences to his family,friends and fans,” he posted on X.
