A man reportedly used bear spray on a Saskatoon police officer during a “physical struggle” with a suspect, according to the service.

Officers were responding to a reported assault in the 1600 block of Avenue B North on Saturday at approximately 12:40 p.m., when they learned someone at the scene had outstanding warrants, the Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) said in a news release.

The suspect tried to flee and kicked an officer, police said.

“A physical struggle ensued, during which a second man approached officers and discharged bear spray in their direction,” the release said.

The initial suspect, aged 33, was arrested at the scene and charged with assault with intent to arrest, personation with intent and breaching court-imposed conditions.

The second man, also 33, ran away after using the bear spray, police said.

He was arrested Sunday and faces charges, including assaulting a peace officer with a weapon and obstructing a peace officer.

Both men were expected to appear in Saskatoon provincial court Monday.
