President Cyril Ramaphosa will address the country on his Cabinet’s approach to managing migration.
President Cyril Ramaphosa will address the country on his Cabinet’s approach to managing migration, Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni said on Friday.
Ntshavheni gave no date for the address, which is being announced amid calls from anti-immigration groups for a “shutdown” to force foreign nationals to leave South Africa by the end of the month.
The minister said the government would not allow that to happen.
"There's nobody who's going to do a shutdown of this country, and we must be very clear about that,” she said at a post-Cabinet briefing.
The country has seen a wave of xenophobic protests, several of which have turned violent, in recent weeks.
Last week, two Mozambican nationals were killed in Asla Park informal settlement in Mossel Bay following anti-foreigner protests.
Earlier this week, NatJoints chairperson Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili said there was no grievance that could justify "murder, assault, intimidation, arson, looting, xenophobic attacks, or any other form of criminal conduct”.
On Friday, Ntshavheni declined to answer questions on who was instigating the violence.
“If we then disclose what our categorisation of the people behind the marches and everything else is, we may compromise the work that is being done by law enforcement”.
The police, she said, were ready “to deal with those who want to violate the laws of the country, whether South African or other".
