Mercedes-Benz has recalled five electric G-Class (G580) vehicles due to wheel bolts that might not be up to scratch.
The G-Class vehicles, better known as G-Wagons, are boxy sports utility vehicles resembling oversized Land Rovers. The G580s are fully electric and retail for between R3.8 million and R4.6 million.
The National Consumer Commission (NCC) released a media statement on Friday saying: “[T]he affected vehicles may have wheel bolts that do not meet specification requirements. This defect may result in the wheel connection loosening over time while driving, which could impair driving stability and increase the risk of an accident.”
The first G580 was introduced towards the end of 2024, and only five units of the G580 EQ Edition One have apparently been sold in South Africa.
The five owners are urged to take the recall seriously and arrange for inspection and repairs at their nearest authorised Mercedes-Benz dealership. All work will be carried out free of charge.
