Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Monday (June 1, 2026) asked the people to share their suggestions for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in a recently launched portal. The law would be implemented soon in the State, Mr. Yadav said.

In a video statement, Mr. Yadav said a high-level committee, formed in April and headed by retired Supreme Court judge, Justice Ranjana Prasad Desai, was touring various parts of the State to gather public opinion on the subject.

“In the current time, there is no need for different customs and legal provisions governing married women as well as different family traditions across various religions. Madhya Pradesh now needs to move towards a Uniform Civil Code,” the CM said, noting that three States had already adopted a UCC.

Uttarakhand was the first to implement a UCC in 2024; Gujarat did so in March this year; Assam passed a Bill on May 27, which is yet to be notified. Chhattisgarh has also formed a panel to prepare a draft UCC Bill for the State.

The State government has launched a website where people can share their suggestions, Mr. Yadav said. “I personally appeal to you to share your suggestions, and whatever thoughts you have, through the website,” he said.

“Eminent experts from diverse fields have been included in the committee. The committee will visit various districts and seek suggestions from members of different religious communities. We want the UCC to be implemented in Madhya Pradesh as soon as possible,” he said.

“Under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the State government is moving forward expeditiously towards implementing the Uniform Civil Code while maintaining harmony and balance among all sections of society,” the CM added.

Earlier on April 27, the Madhya Pradesh government formed a six-member panel headed by Justice (Retd.) Desai, and comprising a retired Indian Administrative Service officer, a senior government official, and legal and social experts. The panel was asked to submit the draft Bill along with a detailed report of its findings to the State government within 60 days.

The government is planning to bring a Bill on a UCC in the State Assembly before Deepavali this year, sources said.
