Brother Mavoorus Maliyekkal, social worker who had rescued several children from the streets, died in Kochi on Tuesday. He was 90.

He was undergoing treatment for some time due to age-related ailments. The death occurred at the Rajagiri Hospital near Aluva.

The funeral will be held at St. Teresa’s Church, Kottackal near Mala in Thrissur on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. The body will be kept at the Gandhinagar ground gallery park in Ernakulam from 9 a.m to 11 a.m for the public to pay homage, according to a communication.

In his social work spanning over several decades, he had rescued several street children. He had worked for their rehabilitation as a key functionary of the Theruvora Pravarthaka Association involved in the rescue of the street children and the homeless.

He was also active in various social initiatives centred around the Ashraya Bhavan in Udaya colony, Gandhinagar.

The Kochi Corporation had named the road where the Ashraya Bhavan was located after him in recognition of his various social and welfare activities.
