PM Modi condoles loss of lives, announces ex-gratia; Multiple fire tenders were rushed to control the fire

Afire broke out at a hotel in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar on Wednesday morning (June 3, 2026), killing at least 21 people and leading to the rescue of more than 40 others. The majority of the deceased are reported to be foreign nationals.

Several of those killed are foreigners, mainly from Central Asia and Africa, officials said.

All of those rescued have been taken to a hospital, according to the Delhi Fire Services. Multiple fire tenders were rushed to the hotel at around 8:50 a.m. after the blaze was reported.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced ₹2 lakh ex-gratia to the victims families, and ₹50,000 to the injured in the fire incident. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. Further details are awaited.

    Guilty will not be spared: Delhi Minister Ashish Sood

    Delhi Power Minister Ashish Sood on Wednesday (June 3, 2026) said that the police is probing the matter of the Malviya Nagar fire which killed atleast 21 people, saying that the building owner, if found responsible for alleged negligence, will be arrested.

    The Delhi Power Minister asserted that an investigation has been launched and that authorities would take strict action against those responsible, with “no illegal building to be spared”.

    Speaking to reporters, Mr. Sood said the building owner would be held accountable if found negligent and that an investigation was underway to determine whether the establishment had obtained the necessary No Objection Certificate (NOC) and permissions to operate as a bed-and-breakfast (BnB) facility.

    Continuous fire incidents extremely concerning, says Kejriwal

    Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal expressed his anguish at the deaths in a fire in Malviya Nagar on Wednesday (June 3, 2026) and said that continuous fire incidents in the city are “extremely concerning.” 

    “I pray to God for the peace of the souls of those who lost their lives in the horrific fire in Malviya Nagar, Delhi. Today, such a massive incident occurred in Malviya Nagar,” Mr. Kejriwal said in a post on X in Hindi.

    The Aam Aadmi Party also alleged lapse on part of the authorities in fire rescue operations.

    “International Shame!! Locals informed fire brigades reached there ‘45 minutes’ late. Locals had to spread the mattresses to rescue foreign nationals. Fire brigade station behind the police station is three minutes away from this fire. Why did it take 45 mins?” Saurabh Bharadwaj, AAP Delhi unit president, said on X.

    MCD orders probe in Malviya Nagar fire incident

    The Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Wednesday (June 3, 2026) ordered an investigation into the Malviya Nagar hotel fire incident, which killed at least 21 people.

    “Orders have been given for investigation in the incident. How old is the building, who is the owner, all these details are being collected. Action will be taken against all those who are responsible for the negligence,” MCD’s standing committee chairperson Satya Sharma said.

    “This is a painful incident. We have directed all the officials to ensure no such incident is repeated again. All other such establishments in the area will be audited,” the chairperson added.

    'Extremely heartbreaking': President Murmu

    President Droupadi Murmu said the loss of lives due to a fire in a south Delhi hotel is extremely heartbreaking and offered deepest condolences to the bereaved families.

    “The news of the loss of lives in the fire incident in Malviya Nagar, Delhi is extremely heartbreaking. I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families and pray for the swift recovery of those injured,” Ms. Murmu said in a post on X in Hindi.

    Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday (June 3, 2026) called deaths in a fire at a Delhi hotel “extremely heartbreaking and soul-wrenching.”

    “The loss of lives in a tragic and devastating fire accident in Delhi is extremely heartbreaking and soul-wrenching,” Mr. Adityanath said.

    Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday (June 3, 2026) expressed grief over the Malviya Nagar fire tragedy in Delhi that claimed 21 lives, describing the incident as “extremely heartbreaking” and urging Congress workers to assist in relief and rescue efforts.

    In a post on X, Mr. Gandhi said, “The news of the deaths of several people in the fire in Malviya Nagar, Delhi, is extremely heartbreaking. I express my deepest condolences to all the bereaved families. I urge all Congress workers to contribute in every possible way to the relief and rescue operations.     Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also condoled the loss of lives and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured in the incident.

    Residents break windows to help people escape, rush with blankets

    There was no moment to spare and the urgency was not lost on the locals who broke glasses and rushed with blankets to save the patrons escaping an inferno that tore through a bed-and-breakfast building in south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar on Wednesday (June 3, 2026).

    Anita Chaudhary, a local resident, said the entire area was sent into panic after sound of several blasts.

    “I heard multiple blast-like sounds and then screams from inside the building. People were shouting for help and some were jumping from windows in a desperate attempt to save themselves. There was chaos all around and residents rushed towards the building to help those trapped inside,” she said.

    Another eyewitness, Sanjay Goyal, who was among the first people to reach the spot, said everyone gathered and got down to help people escape the moment they saw smoke coming out.

    Local administration engaged in relief and rescue operations: Amit Shah

    Union Home Minister Amit Shah condoled the loss of lives in the fire incident in Malviya Nagar and said the local administration is engaged in relief and rescue operations.

    “My heart is deeply grieved by the fire incident in Malviya Nagar, Delhi. The local administration is engaged in relief and rescue operations. My condolences are with those who have lost their loved ones in this heart-wrenching tragedy,” Mr. Shah wrote on X in Hindi.

    “May God grant strength to the bereaved families to bear this sorrow. The injured are being provided with the best medical facilities. I pray for the swift recovery of all the injured,” he added.

    The State Government authorities should provide adequate and timely compensation, including prompt medical care, to the victims, Mr. Kharge said.
