Speculation is growing that Elijah Wood could return as Frodo Baggins in the upcoming Middle-earth film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. While the actor has not officially confirmed any involvement, his recent comments have certainly fuelled excitement among fans who would welcome the return of the beloved hobbit.

Wood famously played Frodo in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, becoming one of the defining faces of Peter Jackson’s hugely successful trilogy. More than two decades after the first film was released, Wood has suggested that he still feels closely connected to the character. Speaking recently, he joked that he “certainly wouldn’t want anybody else to play Frodo… as long as I’m alive and able”, hinting that the role is still very much his in spirit.

Despite the playful comment, Wood stopped short of confirming whether he will appear in the new film. Instead, he acknowledged the enthusiasm surrounding the project while keeping any potential involvement firmly under wraps.

The Hunt for Gollum will be directed by Andy Serkis, who famously portrayed the motion-captured creature Gollum in the original trilogy. The film is expected to explore a story set between the events of The Hobbit films and the beginning of The Lord of the Rings, focusing on the search for Gollum during that period in Middle-earth’s history.

Very little is currently known about the film’s full cast, but the possibility of familiar characters returning has already sparked plenty of discussion among fans. With the film reportedly targeting a December 2027 release, many will be hoping that Frodo may once again find himself drawn back into the world that first made him a cinematic icon.

Both Anya Tayl0r-Joy and Leo Woodall have been linked this week with roles in the film.

For now, Elijah Wood may be keeping quiet, but his comments suggest that if Frodo does return to Middle-earth, he would happily take up the role once again.

Wood will next be seen in Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, in cinemas on March 20th.
