In a move that has been forecasted for several weeks now, LIV Golf pulled the plug on its Team Championship. James Corrigan of The Telegraph reported that LIV players have been informed of the long-anticipated cancellation.

The event was scheduled to be played Aug. 27-30 at The Cardinal at St. John’s in Plymouth, Michigan, west of Detroit. With the tournament being axed, that leaves LIV Indianapolis (Aug. 20-23) as the lone event remaining on the schedule for 2026.

There isn’t much surprise here—everyone saw this one coming from eight miles away (shoutout Eminem).

Reports were circulating that the tournament buildout hadn’t started yet. Nearly a month ago, LIV golfer Martin Kaymer said there was only a 5 percent chance the season finale would be taking place. And Fox Sports removed the listing for the tournament last week, another clear sign the golf wouldn’t be happening.

This is the second LIV tournament nixed in 2026 after the New Orleans event had to be scrapped, so it’s not exactly a shocker.

However, as of this writing, LIV is still selling tickets to the Michigan event. The league even sent out a promotional email this afternoon asking fans to buy tickets before they ran out.

Now, this article will come out and this will probably change. Maybe when you are reading this story, tickets can no longer be purchased.

But, as of Wednesday afternoon, LIV was selling tickets. This is a pretty abysmal showing, even by LIV standards. I mean, I’m sure the money would be refunded to customers anyway, but it’s yet another showcase of how disorganized this league is.

Why did this happen and what does it mean?

After the Saudi Public Investment Fund decided it was pulling its funding from LIV following the 2026 season, there was immediate concern about the league’s cash flow.

The PIF may have promised its short-term support, but there were no guarantees given their desire to leave LIV behind.

Now we’re seeing the consequences of that.

In terms of the future of the league, this second canceled tournament of 2026 doesn’t mean all that much to the people running LIV. Scott O’Neil, the CEO, is still focused on raising investment money. He claims the league will continue into 2027 after receiving substantial pledges, although (and this is critically important) that money is dependent on enough talent hanging around.

At the same time, this canceled Team Championship can’t be leaving players with a great last impression of LIV 1.0—and there could be lasting impacts moving forward. There was $40 million in purse money, including money for the season-long team race, ready to be paid out in Michigan. That money won’t be given now.

If you are a LIV player, you have to be seriously concerned with the viability of the league. O’Neil is touting equity over prize money, but that’s a dangerous game to play.

What if LIV 2.0 is a failure? I mean, the league couldn’t even sniff profitability after the PIF spent $6 billion over four years. Now it’s supposed to be profitable with just a few hundred million?

Betting on equity is betting on the league being successful. And ain’t nobody watching this. They pulled a paltry 453,000 TV viewers last Sunday for LIV New York. And more people showed up to my community pool than attended in person.

That’s after four years of marketing. So why would anyone watch this product in the future? What is going to change?

LIV’s future will become clearer after the final event

On August 23 and beyond, we’re going to be hearing a lot of players open up about where they plan to play golf in 2027.

Some will stick by LIV and others will decide their best pathway is to play the DP World Tour or Asian Tour.

While it seems like LIV will exist in some form moving forward, it’s hard to imagine it being anything but an even more dysfunctional and watered-down version of what we’ve already come to know.
