Construction work is underway in Toronto for new rent-controlled housing on city-owned land near Trinity Bellwoods Park.

On Monday, Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow stood alongside federal officials at the site to promote the milestone for a project the city says will bring 74 new homes, many of which will have two or three units.

“Today, we’re turning City-owned land into new rental housing, including affordable and family-sized homes,” Chow said.

“By working with Build Canada Homes, we’re building the housing Toronto needs so people who work here can afford to live here. Together, we’re delivering a more affordable and caring city for everyone.”

The site of the project is a former parking lot owned by the city, with work being led by Toronto’s CreateTO division.

Funding from the federal government’s Build Canada Homes program is helping to deliver the project.
