WestJet Airlines Ltd. says it has started the “difficult process” of parking 737 jets as the carrier stares down a Sunday deadline for a possible strike by flight attendants.

The Calgary-based company did not confirm the move will lead to flight cancellations but it urged all guests to check the status of their flights prior to leaving for the airport.

“This necessary step allows the airline to maintain operational control and protect the integrity of the broader network,” WestJet said in a release. “Most importantly, this proactive measure minimizes the risk of stranding guests and aircraft. ”

WestJet on Friday said negotiations with CUPE 8125, which represents 4,400 of its flight attendants, have so far failed to produce a deal. The workers, who are pushing for better pay, are in a position to strike as early as Sunday morning.

The company has also issued a lockout notice.

The airline says it remains active at the bargaining table to “reach a mutually agreeable deal at the earliest possible time.”
