Matias Soule has fired Roma into a 1-0 lead against Manchester United in their Champions League clash at Old Trafford on Tuesday night, punishing a costly mistake from Kobbie Mainoo.

The Argentine broke the deadlock in the 18th minute after United carelessly surrendered possession, leaving Michael Carrick’s side with another uphill battle.

Mainoo was caught on the ball in midfield, allowing Roma to launch a quick attack before Evan Mora spotted Soule completely unmarked on the opposite side of the pitch.

Mora picked out his team-mate with an excellent diagonal pass, and Soule made no mistake, calmly slotting his finish past goalkeeper Senne Lammens to silence the Old Trafford crowd.

It was another damaging moment for Carrick’s struggling side, who entered the contest without a win in nine matches across all competitions.

United had also lost their previous two Champions League fixtures against Atletico Madrid and Como, leaving them under pressure to get their European campaign back on track.

Roma, meanwhile, arrived in Manchester in much better form, having beaten Udinese 5-2 in Serie A at the weekend.
