Lamine Yamal has put Barcelona into an early 1-0 lead against Aston Villa in their Champions League clash at the Camp Nou on Tuesday night.

The 19-year-old broke the deadlock in the seventh minute after capitalising on a costly mistake from Villa midfielder Joao Gomes.

Gomes misplaced a pass in a dangerous area, allowing Yamal to pounce on the loose ball and drive towards goal.

The Barcelona winger made no mistake, steering his finish into the bottom corner to give goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez little chance and hand Hansi Flick’s side the perfect start.

It was a nightmare opening for Unai Emery’s men, who arrived in Spain having won all three of their opening Champions League matches.

Villa had beaten Club Brugge, Fenerbahce and Viking in the league phase, scoring 12 goals across those three fixtures.

Barcelona, meanwhile, were looking to bounce back from their 4-2 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain last time out in Europe.

Yamal had also scored in that defeat in Paris, continuing his impressive form in the competition.

Villa almost produced an immediate response to the teenager’s opener, with Matty Cash firing a volley narrowly wide before Joao Gomes saw an effort blocked by Joao Cancelo.
