Unifor has already ratified new collective agreements with Ford Motor Co. and General Motors this summer, with current deals set to expire Sept. 20. U.S. President Donald Trump threatened last week on social media to hike tariffs on all vehicles, auto parts and steel from Canada to 50 per cent beginning Jan. 1. Payne says that Trump knows, “a 50 per cert tariff on cars and parts will shut down the entire North American auto industry, likely within a week or ten days.” Unifor has expressed the importance of maintaining an auto industry in Canada and will continue to fight for its members amid the Canada-U.S. trade war.
