Top EU Import CountriesEU member flags

Imports purchased by the 27 members of the European Union cost a total US$7.158 trillion in 2025.

That dollar amount reflects a 12.4% increase in the overall cost of EU imported goods versus 2021 which was $6.367 trillion. Those statistics exclude the now ex-EU member the United Kingdom from the comparison.

Spending on the European Union’s imports in 2025 equal 27.7% of world imports which totaled $25.838 trillion. That global percentage is slightly higher than 27.4% for 2024 but lower than the 28.4% five years earlier during 2021.

The European Union’s population was 451.1 million people according to Statista metrics. Consequently, the total $7.158 trillion in 2025 EU imports translates to approximately $15,850 in international purchases by every person in the current 27-member European Union.

As the following statistical table shows, Germany, France and Italy continue to be the EU’s dominant players in international trade for 2025. Those three leading importers paid for more than three-fifths (41.7%) of all EU spending on imported products.

Note that the United Kingdom exited from the EU on January 31, 2020. The UK remains a major supplier for the EU’s demand for imported goods, accounting for 40.1% of the UK’s total export revenues for 2025. That percentage is greater than the 33.4% share that the UK earned in its last year of EU membership in 2020.

Below is an analysis of European Union import countries that purchased products from around the globe during 2025. Also shown is each country’s share of the EU’s global imports.
