Nicknamed “The Land of Lincoln” and “Prairie State” located in America’s Midwestern region, Illinois shipped US$80.2 billion worth of export products around the globe in 2025.

That dollar amount represents a 1.6% increase from $78.9 billion four years earlier in 2021.

Year over year, the overall value of goods exported from Illinois slipped by -2.3% compared to $82 billion during 2024.

Illinois ranks as fifth among America’s top biggest exporters by state logging front-runners Texas, California, New York state and Louisiana.

The value of Illinois’ exports equals 3.7% of the United States’ overall exported products sold in 2025, down from 4% one year earlier.

Illinois’ exported products represent 6.7% of the state’s total economic output or nominal Gross Domestic Product in 2025 ($1.202 trillion). That percentage lags the 7.2% for the prior year.

Given Illinois’ population of 12.5 million people, its total US$80.2 billion in 2025 exports translates to roughly $6,400 for every resident in the Land of Lincoln state. That dollar metric lags the average $6,450 per capita in 2024.

Illinois’ unemployment rate was 4.9% at the end of July 2026, up from 4.3% one year earlier per YCharts.

Illinois’ top 10 exports represent over one-quarter (26.2%) of the overall value of the state’s global shipments.

The fastest-growing export category from Illinois from 2024 to 2025 was unwrought gold, propelled by a 598.3% advance.

Double-digit year-over-year improvements were for Illinoisian exports of immunological products in measured doses (up 42.7%), modems and similar reception and transmission devices (up 23.7%), civilian aircraft or aircraft parts (up 15.9%) then miscellaneous medications packaged for retail sale (up 11.2%).

There was a trio of year-over-year decliners among Illinois’ top 10 export products. These were soya beans (down -44.9% from 2024), light petroleum oils (down -30.3%) and miscellaneous blood fractions or antisera (down -16.8%).

Illinois incurred a total -US$130.7 billion deficit exporting and importing products during 2025. That dollar amount reflects a -3.8% reduction from -$135.9 billion in red ink for 2024.

Another 8.6% was bought by leading importers in Asia (mainland China, Japan and Singapore).
