Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Monday announced the waiver  of cooperative bank loans up to  ₹75,000.

This is in addition to a waiver already announced by the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam-led government since it came to power.

Partial waiver

The additional crop loan waiver will impose a financial burden of ₹953 crore on the State government. With this, the government said the total crop loan waiver being provided to farmers will be ₹6,220 crore, benefiting around 13.34 lakh farmers.

Under the waiver, crop loans of up to ₹75,000 will be fully waived; for loans between ₹75,000 and ₹1 lakh, the maximum waiver will be ₹75,000; and loans above ₹1 lakh will be eligible for a maximum waiver of ₹35,000.

The move will benefit 2.38 lakh farmers who have availed themselves of crop loans between ₹75,000 and ₹1 lakh.

Additional Waiver

According to a government release, these farmers will receive an additional waiver of up to ₹40,000 over and above the relief they have already received.

Making a statement in the Assembly, Vijay said the decision was taken keeping in mind the interests of farmers despite the State’s financial constraints. 

He said a country could prosper only when it respects agriculture and provides security and support to farmers.
