Keep kids water safe

The pain of Michael Swift and Suzie Gough is almost impossible to imagine.

Their much-loved son Mackenzie was just 11 when he drowned in a river during last month’s heatwave.

Today, they have found the courage to speak out in the hope that another family is spared the same heartbreak. Their warning could not be more important.

Open water may look calm and inviting, particularly to children on hot summer days.

The reality can be deadly. That is why our Save Lives for Sam campaign, backed by Michael and Suzie, matters so much.

Named after teenager Sam Haycock, who also lost his life in open water, it is demanding action before more young lives are cut short.

A total of 19 people, including 13 children, died in open water during the last week ofMay alone. We cannot accept this.

Better education, clearer warnings and a national water safety campaign will save lives.

Ghost busters

While Vladimir Putin’s war grinds on and innocent Ukrainians die, his cronies thought they could sneak dirty money through British waters.

They were wrong. Yesterday, the UK sent a powerful message that those days are not guaranteed to continue.

The sight of Royal Marines storming a sanctioned tanker in the English Channel was a reminder that sanctions mean little unless they are enforced. The operation was not political theatre. It was action.

Russia has been laundering oil profits through ghost ships for years. Britain has now served notice that those days are over.

Win for parents

Nine in 10 parents demanded action. Bereaved families have pleaded for it.
