Marvel’s resident anti-hero is back, and if the first trailer for The Punisher: One Last Kill is anything to go by, subtlety is not on the agenda.

Jon Bernthal reprises his role as Frank Castle in the upcoming Disney+ special, marking a full-throttle return for a character long defined by brutality and moral ambiguity. The trailer leans hard into that legacy, teasing a story that is as psychologically driven as it is relentlessly violent, with Castle once again caught between purpose and pure destruction.

Set in the aftermath of Daredevil: Born Again, the special appears to pick up with Castle on the run and, perhaps more interestingly, searching for something beyond revenge. Of course, this being The Punisher, that search doesn’t last long. The footage promises a familiar descent back into chaos, with glimpses of blood-soaked confrontations and the kind of uncompromising action that made the character such a standout in his earlier iterations.

There’s also a sense that Marvel isn’t sanding down the edges here. Early looks suggest a continuation of the darker tone associated with the character, even as he is folded more firmly into the wider MCU. That tension, between mainstream integration and maintaining the Punisher’s rawness, is where the project feels most interesting.

Behind the camera, Reinaldo Marcus Green directs and co-writes alongside Bernthal, hinting at a more personal, character-led approach beneath the violence. The special is expected to act as a bridge between Daredevil: Born Again and the wider cinematic universe, including a looming appearance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

If the trailer is anything to go by, One Last Kill isn’t attempting to reinvent Frank Castle. Instead, it doubles down on what makes him compelling in the first place: a man who can’t quite escape the very thing that defines him. And, crucially, doesn’t seem to want to.

The Punisher: One Last Kill is on Disney+ from May 12th.
