The COEs will provide advanced training infrastructure, coaching, sports science and high-performance athlete management for state, national and international level athletes

With the objective of preparing athletes for the 2036 Olympics, the Tamil Nadu government proposes to set up discipline-specific Olympic Centres of Excellence(COEs). These centres will provide advanced training infrastructure, coaching, sports science and high-performance athlete management for athletes showing medal potential at the State, national and international levels.

The new TVK-led Tamil Nadu government has made a slew of announcements to grow the state’s sports ecosystem in an effort to make it one of the leading sporting hubs in the country and a major contributor to India’s Olympic aspirations, as part of its 2026-27 policy note for the Youth Welfare And Sports Development Department.

These include multiple new sports infrastructure and institutional initiatives like new stadiums, sporting complexes and Olympic centres of excellence.

Sporting ecosystem

The COEs will be complemented by the Tamil Nadu Olympic City, which is specifically designed to provide a strong sporting ecosystem comprising international standard infrastructure, sports science and sports medicine, coaching, residential amenities and competition venues. The Olympic City will be dedicated to athletes who excel at the COEs to maximise their Olympic medal potential.

It will also set up a dedicated Talent Research Wing (TRW) to identify, nurture and develop sporting talent in the 8–18 years age group through a data-driven athlete development pathway. Talented sportspersons identified through the TRW will be inducted into sports hostels based on their age, potential and performance, where they will receive systematic coaching, sports science support and competitive exposure.

Cricket Stadium

Beyond the Olympics, the government has also announced plans to set up a 30,000-seater international cricket stadium at Singanallur, Coimbatore. The stadium, built on 28 acres will have seven pitches alongside other amenities like practice pitches, gyms, swimming pool, lounge and jogging tracks. The plan for an international stadium in Coimbatore was announced by the earlier DMK government.

It has also announced plans to expedite the completion of the District Sports Complexes (DSC), in the six newly created districts, with construction work in progress for establishin District Sports Complexes in Kallakurichi, Ranipet, and Tirupathur districts. “Further, action is being taken for the establishment of a new District Sports Complex in Mayiladuthurai district,” the policy report added.

The government has also announced plans to set up multiple sports hostels at cities like Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai and Salem.
