A doe and her fawn died on Wednesday (September 2, 2026) morning after four stray dogs chased them along a forest road here. A morning walker shooed the dogs off, but the fawn died at the veterinary hospital within hours and its mother later that day.

P. Bharath, a walker, was returning home around 10 a.m. when he spotted the deer and fawn crossing the road with the dogs in pursuit. The pack soon caught the fawn and attacked it. Mr. Bharath ran towards the animals, forcing the dogs to abandon the fawn and chase its mother instead.

He alerted an animal rescue team, which reached the spot and rescued both animals. They were taken to the area veterinary hospital, where the fawn died while undergoing treatment. The doe, which was critically injured, died later in the day, forest official Ghouse Basha said.

The incident has renewed concerns among walkers over the growing stray-dog threat to wildlife. They said the two-kilometre stretch between the railway gate and Vellore Road had become a litter zone following the mushrooming of eateries. Discarded food was attracting stray dogs, turning the forest road into a dangerous corridor for deer, they said.
