With schools reopening after the summer holidays, the police have stepped up fitness checks on vehicles used by educational institutions to ensure the safety of children.

A team led by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Shareen Begum checked the condition of school vehicles and their documents on Thursday (June 11, 2026). She asked the drivers to keep the vehicles fit.

Ms. Shareen Begum, along with traffic ACPs and inspectors, checked the documents relating to the fitness, licence and insurance of the vehicles. She asked the institutions to appoint cleaners in the buses for the safety of students.

“School buses should have first-aid kits, fire extinguishers and emergency doors. The school managements should mention ‘School Bus’ clearly on the vehicles and ensure that brakes, headlights and indicators are in working condition,” the DCP said.

The managements should take all measures to prevent drunken driving, rash driving and overloading, failing which action would be taken against the drivers as well as the institutions, Police Commissioner S. V. Rajashekar Babu warned.

“We appeal to the parents to check the condition of school buses and the behaviour of drivers and cleaners before admission,” the DCP said, adding that the special drive would continue.

Stern action would be taken against the managements if buses plied without proper documents, the Police Commissioner said.
