Nicknamed the “Keystone State” or “Quaker State” and located in America’s northeastern and Mid-Atlantic regions, Pennsylvania shipped US$52.2 billion worth of exported products around the world in 2025.

That dollar amount results from a 4.8% increase from $49.8 billion four years earlier in 2022.

Year over year, the overall value of Pennsylvanian exports declined by -2.3% compared to $53.5 billion during 2024.

Pennsylvania ranks as America’s 12th biggest exporter by state lagging front-runners including Texas, California, New York state, Louisiana, Illinois and Florida.

The value of Pennsylvania’s exports equals 2.4% of the United States’ overall exported products for 2025 ($2.178 trillion), lagging Pennsylvania’s 2.6% one year earlier.

Pennsylvania’s exported products represent 4.9% of the state’s total economic output or nominal Gross Domestic Product in 2025 ($1.056 trillion).

Given Pennsylvania’s population of 13.1 million people, its total US$52.2 billion in 2025 exports translates to roughly $4,000 for every resident in the Quaker State. That dollar metric lags the average $4,100 per capita for 2024.

Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate was 4.2% at the end of April 2026, mirroring the 4.2% one year prior per YCharts.

The following export products represent the highest dollar value in Pennsylvania global shipments during 2025. Also shown is the percentage share each export category represents in terms of overall exports from Pennsylvania.

Figures are shown at the more granular six-digit Harmonized Tariff System code level, for more precise product identification.

  1. Human medicine vaccines: US$2.4 billion (4.5% of total Pennsylvanian exports)
  2. Liquified propane: $2.3 billion (4.4%)
  3. Immunological products for retail sale: $2.1 billion (4.1%)
  4. Coal (non-agglomerated, bituminous): $1.54 billion (2.9%)
  5. Miscellaneous medications in dosage for retail sale: $1.46 billion (2.8%)
  6. Smartphones: $1.1 billion (2.1%)
  7. Modems, similar reception/transmission devices: $706.7 million (1.4%)
  8. Civilian aircraft, engines or other aircraft parts: $691.9 million (1.3%)
  9. Bombs, mines, similar ammunition: $595 million (1.1%)
  10. Liquified butanes: $524.9 million (1%)

Pennsylvania’s top 10 exports generated just over one-quarter (25.6%) of the overall value of the state’s global shipments.

Bombs, mines and similar ammunition were the fastest grower among the leading Pennsylvanian export product categories, increasing by 51.2% from 2024 to 2025.

In second place were liquified butanes (up 20.2%) ahead of exported smartphones (up 16.4%) and immunological products packaged for retail sale (up 11%).

There were 3 double-digit decliners among Pennsylvania’s top 10 export products: miscellaneous medications in dosage packaged for retail sale (down -24.3% from 2024), modems and similar reception or transmission devices (down -17.8%), then non- agglomerated, bituminous coal (down -16.3%).

More Key Facts about Pennsylvania’s International Trade

Pennsylvania incurred an overall -US$83.8 billion trade deficit exporting and importing products during 2025. That dollar amount reflects a 13.6% year-over-year expansion from -$73.8 billion in red ink for 2024.

Another way of saying surplus or deficit is positive or negative net exports. In a nutshell, the term “net exports” quantifies the amount by which foreign spending on a state’s goods or services exceeds or lags that same state’s spending on foreign goods or services.

Pennsylvanian imports totaled $136 billion for 2025.

Below are Pennsylvania’s top 10 import products highlighting the state’s highest spending on foreign-made goods in 2025.

  1. Immunological products for retail sale: US$15.4 billion (11.3% of total Pennsylvanian imports)
  2. Miscellaneous medications in dosage for retail sale: $13 billion (9.6%)
  3. Miscellaneous digital processing units: $9.9 billion (7.3%)
  4. Smartphones: $3.9 billion (2.9%)
  5. Crude petroleum oils: $3.81 billion (2.8%)
  6. Human medicine vaccines: $3.81 billion (2.8%)
  7. Small portable computers: $3.5 billion (2.6%)
  8. Mid-sized automobiles (piston engine): $2.6 billion (1.9%)
  9. Beef (boneless, frozen): $1.9 billion (1.4%)
  10. Automobiles (both spark ignition, electric motors): $1.6 billion (1.2%)

Pennsylvania has highly negative net exports especially in the international trade of a wide variety of medicines, mobile phones and crude petroleum oils. In turn, these cashflows indicate Pennsylvania’s strong competitive disadvantages under those product categories showing the strong impact of foreign goods on the Pennsylvanian global balance sheet.
