An Oceanian country situated immediately north of Australia, the Independent State of Papua New Guinea shipped US$15.9 billion worth of exported products around the world in 2025.

That calculated dollar amount results from a 64.9% increase from $9.66 billion five years earlier in 2021.

Year over year, the overall value of Papua New Guinean exports accelerated by 15.7% compared to $13.76 billion starting from 2024.

The top 5 most valuable goods exported from Papua New Guinea are petroleum gases, unwrought gold, copper ores and concentrates, palm oil and crude petroleum oil. Revealing a concentrated portfolio, those five leading product groups represent over three-quarters (78.3%) of value of Papua New Guinea’s exports during 2025.

Smaller percentages went to buyers in North America (1.2%), Africa (0.13%) then Latin America (0.0002%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean.

Given Papua New Guinea’s population of 12.8 million people, its total US$15.9 billion in exports translates to roughly $1,250 for every resident in the island country. That dollar metric exceeds the average $1,100 per capita one year earlier for 2024.

The following export product groups represent the highest dollar value in Papua New Guinean global shipments during 2025. Also shown is the percentage share each export category represents in terms of overall exports from Papua New Guinea.

  1. Mineral fuels including oil: US$6 billion (37.5% of total exports)
  2. Gems, precious metals: $4 billion (25.1%)
  3. Ores, slag, ash: $2.5 billion (15.9%)
  4. Animal/vegetable fats, oils, waxes: $1.1 billion (6.9%)

Products Behind Papua New Guinea’s Best Trade Surpluses

Overall Papua New Guinea achieved a US$9.74 billion trade surplus for 2025, expanding by 35.9% from the $7.2 billion in black ink one year earlier in 2024.

The following types of Papua New Guinean product shipments represent positive net exports or a trade balance surplus. Investopedia defines net exports as the value of a country’s total exports minus the value of its total imports.

In a nutshell, net exports represent the amount by which foreign spending on a home country’s goods or services exceeds or lags the home country’s spending on foreign goods or services.

  1. Mineral fuels including oil: US$5 billion (Down by -0.04% since 2024)
  2. Gems, precious metals: $4 billion (Up by 52.9%)

  10. Fish: $203.7 million (Down by -59.8%)

Historically, Papua New Guinea earns positive net exports in the international trade of petroleum gases and, to a lesser extent, crude oil. In turn, these cashflows indicate Papua New Guinea’s strong competitive advantages under the category mineral fuels including oil.

Products Causing Papua New Guinea’s Worst Trade Deficits

Below are exports from Papua New Guinea that result in negative net exports or product trade balance deficits. These negative net exports reveal product categories where foreign spending on home country Papua New Guinea’s goods trail Papua New Guinean importer spending on foreign products.

  2. Vehicles: -$508.4 million (Down by -0.6%)
  3. Electrical machinery, equipment: -$382.1 million (Down by -12.2%)

Papua New Guinea has highly negative net exports and therefore deep international trade deficits under the machinery including computers category.
