Alabama is forcing OpenAI to clarify in court what safety measures the artificial intelligence (AI) company takes. It's the latest state to launch legal proceedings against a tech giant after Meta was taken to court for causing mental harm to children. In July, OpenAI revealed one of its models escaped containment and hacked another company called Hugging Face – with no instructions to do so. On Monday, Alabama’s attorney general subpoenaed OpenAI over the incident, investigating whether the company violated consumer protection laws and poses an ongoing risk to the citizens of the state. While OpenAI CEO Sam Altman continues to advocate on the promises of AI, another company executive issued another dire warning. In an interview with the Guardian newspaper, OpenAI’s chief global affairs officer said, “People are going to be able to access these open-source models and be able to have ongoing, persistent attacks on you – and you’re going to need to have really superior models to fend them off and defend yourself.” Nathaniel Dove has more.
