Omars Motor Den owner Yusuf Omar was briefly detained after obstructing police and SIU investigators in search of a luxury car linked to Tembisa Hospital kingpin Morgan Maumela.

  • A Mpumalanga car dealer was arrested after obstructing the SIU and police searching for a luxury car linked to Tembisa Hospital extraction kingpin Morgan Maumela.
  • Maumela, his vast network of companies and sprawling collection of luxury properties were first exposed in 2023 in a News24 investigation titled Silenced.
  • The SIU expanded its investigation of his network of proxy companies to 41 entities, paid R820 million by the Gauteng health department.

Mpumalanga supercar dealer Yusuf Omar was arrested after a skirmish with police and Special Investigating Unit officials searching for a Bentley Continental GT linked to Tembisa Hospital extraction kingpin Morgan Maumela.

Omar was bundled into a police van after refusing to cooperate with law enforcement officials trying to find the luxury car previously purchased and owned by the MHR Maumela Family Trust.

This move resulted in a change of heart and his cooperation with law enforcement.

News24 revealed in 2023 that the trust had been the ultimate destination of money extracted from Tembisa Hospital through hundreds of dubious contracts for the supply of medical goods.

His companies were first flagged by Gauteng health department whistleblower Babita Deokaran, who was assassinated less than three weeks after reporting suspicious transactions which she framed then as possibly fraudulent.

The trust also amassed a property portfolio worth more than R300 million in five years, with palatial homes in Camps Bay, Bantry Bay, Sandton, Hartbeespoort and Zimbali on the KwaZulu-Natal coastline.

The search for and the seizure of the Bently on Friday came after the SIU obtained two court orders: one for the restraint of the car and the second for contempt.

“The first order, granted on 2 June 2026, empowers the SIU, through the appointed curator bonis, to take possession of the Bentley from Omar Motor Den,” the SIU said in a statement, adding that “the dealership failed to disclose that the car was in its possession when it was served with the preservation order on 9 October 2025”.

The SIU’s investigation found that the car, “a restrained asset under a preservation order until 29 September 2025”, had been transferred multiple times over the years.

“Despite these transfers, evidence suggests the Bentley remains in Omar’s possession, raising concerns of concealment and dissipation,” the graft-busting agency said.

“The order for contempt of court relates to the Special Tribunal order of 29 September 2025, which preserves all assets linked to Hangwani Maumela in the SIU’s Tembisa Hospital investigation… the sale and transfer of the vehicle constitute a clear breach of the undertaking given by the dealership on 9 October 2025, in which it stated that ‘Omar intended in good faith to cooperate with any investigation… in respect of any vehicles that concern the respondents (Maumela and his associated businesses)’.”

Last year, the National Prosecuting Authority’s Asset Forfeiture Unit preserved palatial homes, supercars and a boat belonging to Maumela.

The assets are valued at R325 million.

He has yet to be criminally charged.

The start of the probe coincided with a corruption investigation launched by the Hawks.

After four years, not a single arrest has been made, and none of the hospital syndicate leaders have been placed before a court.
