  • Shrapnel killed a man in central Israel as several blasts rocked the area.
  • Iran launched missiles at Israel.
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin pledged “unwavering support” to Iran’s new supreme leader.

Israel’s first responders said shrapnel killed a man in central Israel as several blasts rocked the area on Monday, shortly after the military detected new missile launches from Iran.

“After performing resuscitation efforts, we had to pronounce the death of a man, approximately 40 years old,” Magen David Adom said in a statement, adding that the death occurred at a construction site in central Israel.

Another man was seriously injured and evacuated for treatment, the rescuers added, after both people had sustained “several shrapnel injuries to their bodies”.

First responders say at least 11 people have been killed and dozens injured in Israel since Iran began firing missiles at the country in retaliation for joint US-Israeli strikes.

Several blasts rocked central Israel on Monday, seriously injuring at least two people, emergency services said, shortly after the military reported it had detected new missiles launched from Iran.

Paramedics were “searching a number of scenes and treating two unconscious males in serious condition”, the Magen David Adom emergency service said in a statement.

The military said there were reports of several impact sites from the missiles.

“Defensive systems are operating to intercept the threat,” the military had earlier said.

The people of Iran deserve freedom, dignity, and the right to decide their own future.

Even if we know this will be fraught with danger and instability during and after the war.

We are now seeing a regional conflict with unintended consequences.

On Monday, Iran accused European countries, including France, of creating the conditions that led to the US and Israel attacking the Islamic Republic and triggering a war.

“European countries have unfortunately helped create these conditions,” said foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei during a weekly press briefing.

“Instead of insisting on the rule of law, instead of standing up to the bullying and excesses of the United States, they spoke and agreed with them at the UN Security Council regarding the discussion on restoring sanctions, and all these things together emboldened the American and Zionist parties to continue committing their crimes.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday pledged “unwavering support” to Iran’s new supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, appointed after his father and predecessor was killed in US-Israeli strikes.

“I would like to reaffirm our unwavering support for Tehran and solidarity with our Iranian friends,” Putin said in a message to Khamenei, adding that “Russia has been and will remain a reliable partner” to Iran.

“At a time when Iran is confronting armed aggression, your tenure in this high position will undoubtedly require great courage and dedication,” the Russian leader said.

Reuters reported that Iran’s political system swiftly rallied around Khamenei, with politicians and institutions issuing strongly worded pledges of loyalty.

Public processions to take loyalty vows were announced for later in the day.

“We will obey the commander-in-chief until the last drop of our blood,” a statement from the defence council said.

Mojtaba’s father, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, was killed in one of the first strikes launched against Iran more than a week ago.

Despite public vows of loyalty, Iranian society remains deeply divided. Many Iranians publicly celebrated the elder Khamenei’s death, weeks after his security forces killed thousands of anti-government protesters in the worst domestic unrest since the era of Iran’s 1979 revolution.

But there has been little sign of anti-government activity during the bombing campaign.

Activists say it would be unsafe to take to the streets while the country is under attack.

Israel says its war aim is to overthrow Iran’s system of clerical rule.

Washington was initially more circumspect, saying its aim was to destroy Iran’s missile capabilities and nuclear programme, although Trump ratcheted up his demands by also demanding the installation of a compliant Iranian government.

Israel had said it would kill whoever succeeded the elder Khamenei unless Iran ended its hostile policies.
