Wilson Department of English, University of Ottawa ENG 3375 -- Contemporary Literary Theory Week 12 An introduction to the philosophy of Michel Foucault (1925-1984). The lecture provides an overview of Foucault’s key works and philosophical legacy. Particular focus is given to: 1) Foucault’s early “archaeological” works, including Madness and Civilization, The Birth of the Clinic, The Order of Things and The Archaeology of Knowledge; 2) Foucault’s middle period of “genealogical” analysis, including “Nietzsche, Genealogy, History”, Discipline and Punish, and The History of Sexuality, Volume 1; and 3) Foucault’s later works on Bio-politics, Governmentality and the ethics of care of the self. Finally, the lecture discusses the incredible influence Foucault has had on all disciplines in the social sciences and humanities.
