At an announcement for a $2.4 million investment to build a new transitional housing complex for women and children escaping family violence, Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew responded to questions about Tuesday’s federal government announcement of dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs against the U.S. “I can tell you that the conversation with the prime minister has been to prepare for two plus years,” Kinew said, adding, “At some point, the American people will see how damaging this presidency is to their cost of living.” Kinew praised the united stance Canadian politicians are taking in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s aggressive tariff policies and called what he’s seen so far from the federal government “encouraging.” He also urged Canadians to buy domestic goods and services as a way to support the country and protect people’s jobs. “Canada is showing the rest of the world right now that you don’t have to take a knee. You don’t have to bow down. You can be proud. You can have a backbone and you can stand up for your own economy and your own jobs," the premier said. “Maybe the president just has to take an L in the midterms before he sees the writing on the wall,” he added.
