Mazoudier though, is relentless in his pursuit forward, making Beck uncomfortable and feeling the ropes against his back.

A solid opening round with the promise of more to come.

This fight is a massive one for Koen Mazoudier, who revealed to AAP that was once so unwell he was locked in a jail-like mental health facility.

Today he returns to the ring hoping to one day become a world boxing champion. And that is possible.

Mazoudier tells quite the tale of inspiration and overcoming adversity after a life-and-death struggle with drug addition.

"I've lost my mind and been in psychotic episodes and manic states up until the point where I was put into a mental health facility for violent and mentally ill people," the 30-year-old told AAP.

"I was pretty much schizophrenic, like I was having full-blown hallucinations and, forget about my boxing career, it was like whether or not I was ever going to be a sane human being."

Mazoudier's first episode came in his late teens, but his most recent was this year, not even 18 months after taking Nikita Tszyu to the darkest place of his own career in an epic Australasian super-welterweight showdown in Sydney.

Mazoudier's battles began when the then-amateur star spiralled into depression after missing his last chance to represent Australia at an Olympic Games.

"I was using a lot of different drugs, like mainly psychedelic drugs and weed and marijuana, all different party drugs," he said.

"It was a steady decline of having failures in the sport, trying to then find some joy outside the sport: drinking, drugging.

"I'd have another bigger loss and find an outlet, and then you're really strict obviously doing everything right when you're getting ready for a fight."

The lowest of lows was being placed in a mental health facility and threatened with a straitjacket.

"I was originally arrested from my house and taken to hospital," Mazoudier said.

"I said I don't want to take any drugs, like don't give me anything, and they said, 'Either you take these pills or we're going to hold you down and inject them', so it was right on that borderline.

"I was on medicine they give to schizophrenic people, so I was in that sort of state, and in there it was pretty much jail for mentally ill people.

"I was locked in my room for certain hours, only allowed outside for certain hours, security guards and meals at certain times.

"It was just a rehabilitation centre to make sure that I'd be able to go back out into society OK."

Having children saved his life, and now Mazoudier says sons Miles and Bowie, daughter Olive and wife Breanna are driving the Blacktown-born battler towards his dream of fighting for a world title.

"I don't know where I'd be without my kids and boxing," he said.

After relocating from Sydney to the Central Coast for financial reasons, Mazoudier is confident more big-time opportunities will come, as long as he keeps winning.

"I've gone all in," Mazoudier said.

"Even the beginning of the year I had another episode and wasn't sure if I'd ever box again, but I've come out the other side.

'But I was f***ed up. I was really in mentally unwell states so, yeah, I'm proud of myself to have dragged myself out again."

That is, of course, if he wins tonight against Sam Beck.

Koen Mazoudier was left high and dry by Jermall Charlo last month, when the former two-division world champion pulled out of their encounter at the last minute.

Despite the disappointment at Charlo's conduct, No Limit Boxing boss George Rose confirmed Mazoudier will get his shot at the American next

"Should he get through this fight he will fight Jermall Charlo in his next bout," Rose said.

"He's got a lot on the line here. Not only does he have a tough opponent, but if he wins he gets that massive fight against a global superstar.

"We are now in the final stages of locking away that fight."

Mazoudier could be at risk of looking past Beck, but he said he is fully focussed on tonight's task.

"I'm looking straight at Sam Beck. I'm not worrying about anyone else," he said.

"Charlo's a dog for not getting here in the first place, I think it was his fault it didn't go ahead. But it is what it is.

"He was talking about having the best camp he'd ever had, meanwhile getting done for DUIs and getting arrested. How good can your camp be? Doesn't sound like a real serious athlete to me."

This has been scheduled to be 10 rounds at middleweight, with both men making the weight, Mazoudier (72.19kg) and Beck (72.21kg).

One judge scores it 58-55 to Grach.

The other scores it 57-56 to Pluto.

That's closer than I expected to be honest, but Pluto came back well.

How crucial was that knockdown in the second?

"He comes from another planet, and he fights like it too," Grach says.

"He's hard to hit and it's hard to hit someone who doesn't want to get hit!"

Grach is well ahead on the cards, I'd expect, especially with the knock down.

So you'd think that Pluto, if he is to have a chance, will need to get a KO here in the final round.

Grach takes the centre ring, he stalks Pluto who whacks him around the chops with a sharp left - nice shot.

Another good counter from Pluto has Grach comes forward and lands to the body, sweat flies off the head of Grach.

Grach is looking for the home run here, and he gets Pluto up against the ropes, misses with a shot and they grapple together.

Grach backs Pluto up but it's Pluto who lands a couple of shots with his back against the ropes.

Two shots from Grach land, Pluto is giving as good as he gets though.

Another healthy exchange and Grach has to shake his head clear there, great counter punching from Pluto.

Grach is bleeding from a small cut just on the eyebrow of the left eye as the bell rings.

There is the bell, both men raise there hands.

Lots of shadow boxing in there at the moment as both men look for an opening.

Grach blinks first and lands a jab, then lands a flourish of shots that Pluto covers up for.

Good body shot from Pluto, it doesn't seem to give Grach so much as a tickle to be honest though.

Pluto has withstood a lot of punishment already - how much more can he take?

Pluto lands with a cheeky left.

Grach with a crunching body blog there - that sounded painful from 20 yards or so away so it must have stung a bit to the man who took it.

Grach advances and chases Pluto before landing a shot but Pluto counter punches nicely and makes Grach think twice before coming forward again.

Good round from these heavyweights, I wasn't necessarily expecting this to still be going after that knock out but it's looking more and more like that was just a flash.

Grach is controlling the ring and making it seem very small for Pluto here.

A good two-punch combo lands, and another from Grach, mostly off the gloves but the concussive blows seem to make an impact.

Pluto comes back with a left of his own and tries to follow up but Grach does well to hold it at bay.

Pluto responds but not with enough power to worry Grach.

Pluto's feet are steady under him and he does well to take those shots - some tremendous power from Grach there.

It was a flush shot but it's almost a flash knock down in the way that Pluto went down.

Pluto beats the count and looks OK all things considered, Grach is taking his time to see if there's a chance to finish this off right here.

A watchful end to the ground, Pluto will be appreciative of the break.

Here we go. Grach looked very focused at the face off centre ring, Pluto had a little smile on his face.

Another jab by Pluto, who then swings himself almost off his feet before the end of the first ends in a stalemate.

We're about to get underway on the main card here at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre.

And what a treat we have - six rounds of heavyweight rematch action between Brandon Grach and Ike Pluto.

Grach, the 33-year-old known as "The Bull" comes into this fight with a 6-1 record with 4KOs and weighed in at 113.55kg.

The 27-year-old Pluto came in at 94.76kg and has a record of 5-3 (1KO).

They only just fought each other, these two, meeting Sydney in July, a fight won by Grach.

Well, if we're honest, the entire boxing world is an oft-times murky mess of ideas that can be a complete mess if you look to closely at it.

There are even more complications than the rankings, can you believe, because actually the top two rankings in the IBF are vacant at the moment.

American Brandon Adams is the third seed, with Bakhram Murtazaliev, who so comprehensively battered Tim Tszyu to win this title in the first place, the man who Josh Kelly beat to become champion.

Murtazaliev will not be given another shot so soon after losing the title (presumably because of a lack of rematch clause with Kelly) and that puts Nikita next in line.

If either Nikita Tszyu or Ben Mahoney wins this fight, that might put them up above both Adam and Murtazaliev in any case - both are unbeaten and will have fought against each other, two top-10 ranked fighters.

That being said, they are unlikely to become mandatory.

And, as we shall discover later, Kelly fancies taking someone else on first in any case.

But for promotional purposes, it does sound good, doesn't it.

Nikita Tszyu can appreciate the moment, and will keep any unsavoury thoughts to himself when it comes to Ben Mahoney and their Gold Coast tussle billed as an IBF world title eliminator.

The Australian pair's fight tonight is being celebrated as a match-making triumph and "50-50" contest between the unbeaten super welterweights.

Tszyu (12-0) is ranked at No.5 with the IBF, while Mahoney (17 wins, one draw) is No.7.

With the top two spots on that ranking list vacant, promoter No Limit has declared the all-Australian showcase a world title eliminator. It would put the winner in line for a shot at England's IBF champ Josh Kelly.

There is history on the line too, with Hall of Fame father Kostya (18-0) and brother Tim (26-0) combining for a remarkable 56-0 record in Australia.

"He's risen to the occasion when he's needed to, got a good ranking and obviously done something in the sport," Tszyu, still the heavy favourite with bookies, said of the Queenslander.

"We're number one and two in the country, it's huge stakes and there's something quite nice about two Aussies reaching such a high level in the world rankings to be able to fight for a world title eliminator.

"It's not a usual thing you get to experience in Australia.

"Not something you see very often … good match-making, a 50-50 fight."

But whether a shot at Kelly is offered to the winner and if Tszyu — should he beat Mahoney — would take it are two separate matters.

This week Tszyu has sided with his brother's concerns over the IBF's contentious rehydration policy that requires boxers to weigh in on the day of the fight no heavier than 4.5kg over the initial limit.

It's a rule unique to the IBF and one the elder Tszyu said compromised his preparation before a loss to then champion Bakhram Murtazaliev in 2024.

Nikita thinks he could only abide by those rules safely at middleweight, where Tim now fights, throwing doubt on any match-up with Kelly.

But Tszyu is fifth in the WBO standings, where Jaron Ennis (36-0), also the WBA champion, holds court.

And there is an obvious narrative surrounding a title fight with WBC champion Sebastian Fundora, who has beaten Tim twice.

Not that Nikita is getting carried away by all the attention.

"When the moment comes, the moment comes … I live in the present," he said flatly.

Instead he's picturing what will happen on Wednesday at the Gold Coast Convention Centre, but keeping those thoughts to himself.

"Just for hyping up a fight, I don't feel the need to disrespect him," Tszyu said of Mahoney.

"But in the back of my head I still know the things I want to do to him.

"I can smile, but in the back of my head I'm not smiling."

Max Reeves was too good for Oliver Firth in the last of the prelim fights.

After a pretty steady start, the heavily tattooed "Mad Max" upped the intensity at the start of the fourth and not long after blood appeared of indeterminate source on the body of Firth.

Firth's left eye was a mess by the end of that fourth round, the corner having to go to work hard on it between rounds.

Firth was still willing, but Reeves shots were carrying more power and the blood began to flow once more after Firth was rapped a couple more times on the head.

Reeves continued to pummel Firth, and I was stunned he was still standing as the fight went to the eighth round.

But that was where it ended, a flurry of shots sending Firth to the canvas and as the referee started the count, the corner came in to end the fight.
