The Village of Lions Bay has rescinded an evacuation alert due to a nearby wildfire.

The Lone Tree Creek wildfire was spotted on Sunday afternoon, burning above Lions Bay in an area that was hard for firefighters to reach.

On Monday morning, it was classified as being held and there is no evacuation alert or order in effect due to this fire, the village said in an update.

“While this is very positive news, response activities are continuing,” the update read.

“Metro Vancouver and BC Wildfire Service will maintain suppression, monitoring, and assessment of the fire area. Lions Bay Fire Rescue will also continue to maintain situational awareness and coordinate with partner agencies as required.”

The BC Wildfire Service said that more than 7,000 lightning strikes were recorded over the weekend, leading to nearly 50 new fire starts.

In West Vancouver, a fire above Sunset Beach was eventually brought under control along with another fire on Passage Island, off the coast of West Vancouver.
