The Minecraft universe just got a major upgrade: Kirsten Dunst is officially on board for the untitled A Minecraft Movie sequel from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary.

Dunst is set to play Alex, one of the primary avatars available to players in the Minecraft game by Mojang Studios. With the arrival of the character being teased in a post-credits scene during the first film, when they teased that Alex had been living in Steve’s house, whilst he was stuck in the Minecraft world, hinting at her finding an Ender Chest, which could take the characters to a darker world known as ‘The End’ in the sequel.

Whilst further details for the sequel are being kept under wraps, the first Minecraft Movie became a global phenomenon, earning almost a billion dollars ($961.2 million) at the global box office against a $150 million budget, resonating with both old and new Minecraft players. The film became so popular that the Chicken Jockey scene became a viral meme, which led to some in-screen disturbances, with ‘Chicken Jockey Screenings’ later coming into effect.

The first film introduced audiences to four misfits – Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Jason Momoa), Henry (Sebastian Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers), and Dawn (Danielle Brooks), who come together after being pulled through a mysterious portal to the Overworld. On their adventures, they meet the main character of the game, Steve (Jack Black), who shows them the ropes to complete their quest.

This role is a dream come true for Dunst, who expressed her interest in joining the film’s sequel, partially because her children enjoyed the first film but also for the extra cash, sharing in an interview with Town & Country that “Maybe I can just make a movie where I don’t lose money?” Following the casting announcement, Dunst shared a photo on Instagram with the caption “My dream came true 🔥🍗”.

A Minecraft Movie sequel arrives in cinemas on July 23rd, 2027.
