Reddington also said other countries are “light years ahead” of the United States in treating women who speak about their postpartum mental health issues in a way that keeps the children with them in a safe environment while they get treatment.

Reddington also said he hoped the case might spark changes in society when it comes to postpartum health care.

This case highlighted “the woeful deficiency that women have they are pregnant, when they have babies, and God forbid when they are on medication because of postpartum psychosis,” he said.

Reddington said that if Lindsay Clancy is retried, he would take the “unusual” step to request that the jury is sequestered.

“I’ll request it. We’ll see what the judge does,” he told reporters.

Asked how this case differed from others he has worked on, an emotional Reddington said of Lindsay Clancy: “She’s like a daughter to me.”

Reddington said of Lindsay Clancy: “Her life is a tragedy.”

Asked if he would do anything differently in a second trial, Reddington said: “Why would I? I won the case.”

A reminder that we don’t know how the jury was split.

He also said he’d want the same 11 out of the 12 jurors, and finding jurors who weren’t aware of the case would be the real challenge.

Clancy 'will be ready' for potential retrial in fall, defense attorney says

Asked about previous comments that client Lindsay Clancy was not emotionally ready for another trial, Reddington said, “Judge Sullivan is indicating that we are looking at sometime in the fall … She will be ready.”

Clancy will continue to stay in Tewksbury state hospital, he added.

'I hope they can sleep at night,' Reddington says of holdout juror

Asked how Lindsay Clancy and her parents are doing after the mistrial, Reddington replied both times: “Not good.”

Asked if they could go through this again, he replied:

They know that they were robbed by one [juror] for whatever [their] agenda was.

He said the holdout also “stole seven weeks” from the other jurors and caused a mistrial.

And I got a funny feeling that [the jury] would have gone on for another week if they had to. So I hope that [juror] can sleep well at night.

“If we didn’t have that one individual, we would’ve had a verdict and we would be out of here,” he added.

Reddington also thanked the members of the jury “minus one”, referring to the holdout juror.

Clancy's defense lawyer says he 'crushed' the prosecution's case

Lindsay Clancy’s defense attorney Kevin Reddington is now speaking to reporters outside the courthouse.

“Obviously this is not a time for gloating, bragging, expressing victory. It’s a very sad case,” he said.

He said he “crushed” the prosecution’s case, adding: “I’m representing a woman who is a fantastic, wonderful individual. This woman is so brave, so awesome.”

She sat there through seven weeks of the trial, where nobody had anything bad to say about her except the two prosecutors.

Trump calls trial a 'horrible tragedy'

Speaking at the White House while taking questions from reporters, Donald Trump has weighed in on the case.

After a reporter asked him if he’d been following the trial, Trump called the case a “horrible tragedy” and a “terrible situation”.

“I assume there’s going to be another trial,” the US president said. “She did a horrible, horrible thing. Can’t be worse.”

Trump added that Clancy would have to pay “a price”.

There’ll be a price. It’s going to be a mental institution or jail or something ... it’s too bad.

Cruz said he acknowledged that postpartum depression impacts the lives of many women, but argued that the evidence suggests Lindsay Clancy was “in control of her actions when she committed those homicides”. (A reminder that Clancy’s defense argued that she suffered from severe postpartum psychosis, which is different to postpartum depression).

The prosecution “did our part”, Cruz went on, adding that he’s proud of the work they did in the case. He particularly praised assistant district attorneys Jennifer Sprague and Shanan Buckingham, who “are both mothers themselves, and went home to their families after each long day in court.”

They embraced the most difficult trial assignment with utmost professionalism and always with the thoughts of Cora, Dawson and little Callan on their minds.

Cruz added that “as a father and a grandfather, I cannot imagine the hell this entire family has lived through”.

Cruz went on to acknowledge that this has been “an emotional trial for everybody”.

This has been emotional for the Duxbury community. It’s been emotional for you members of the media.

He goes on to centre the children, Cora, Dawson and Callan in his remarks, arguing that the case “is not about the healthcare system or how women are treated in it”.

This was and has always been about getting justice for those three little babies. We’re here at this courthouse today because those children are not … Our priority has always been to fight for Cora, for Dawson and for Callan.

Cruz also thanked the jury for their hard work and their service.

Prosecution says decision on retrial won't be made today

Speaking outside the courthouse, Tim Cruz, the Plymouth county district attorney, has said in a statement that there will be no decisions made today regarding a retrial.

I’ll be meeting with our team and we will address this case further at the appropriate time in the context of an official court proceeding. So you will not get an answer on that question today.
