The IPL 2027 trade window could witness one of the biggest player exchanges in the tournament’s history, with Hardik Pandya reportedly closing in on a move from Mumbai Indians (MI) to Punjab Kings (PBKS). The proposed deal is believed to involve India pacer Arshdeep Singh and wicketkeeper-batter Vishnu Vinod moving to Mumbai, although neither franchise has officially confirmed the development.

If completed, the transfer could significantly change the balance of both teams. While Hardik’s arrival would strengthen Punjab’s all-round department, it would also raise an interesting question about the franchise’s leadership structure. Will Shreyas Iyer continue as captain, or will Hardik take over the responsibility at PBKS?

Both players have considerable IPL captaincy experience, making this a fascinating situation for Punjab Kings. Let’s take a look at 3 possible scenarios that could emerge if the reported trade becomes official.

1. Hardik Pandya could replace Shreyas Iyer as captain

The possibility of Hardik becoming Punjab Kings’ next captain cannot be dismissed, considering his impressive leadership record in the IPL. The all-rounder first established himself as a captain during his stint with Gujarat Titans. Appointed skipper ahead of the franchise’s debut season in 2022, Hardik guided GT to the championship in their very first campaign. He subsequently led them to another final in 2023, cementing his reputation as one of the successful leaders in the competition.

His next move to Mumbai Indians ahead of IPL 2024 also came with a significant leadership change. Hardik replaced Rohit Sharma as captain despite the latter having delivered five IPL trophies to the franchise. That decision demonstrated Mumbai’s willingness to build a new leadership structure around Hardik.

A similar possibility could emerge at Punjab if the management believes he is the right person to lead its next championship project. His experience of handling high-pressure matches and managing an IPL dressing room could make him an attractive captaincy option.

Moreover, acquiring a player of Hardik’s stature through a major trade could indicate Punjab’s intention to make him a central figure in their future plans. However, his previous appointment at Mumbai does not necessarily guarantee that he will demand the captaincy at another franchise.

2. Shreyas Iyer could continue as Punjab Kings captain

While Hardik’s leadership credentials are impressive, Iyer has a strong case to retain the captaincy. Iyer has already established himself as an accomplished IPL leader. He guided Kolkata Knight Riders to the championship in 2024 and subsequently took charge of Punjab Kings.

Under his leadership, PBKS enjoyed an impressive IPL 2025 campaign, reaching the final before finishing as runners-up. His ability to manage different combinations and deliver results under pressure has made him an important part of the franchise’s plans.

There is also the Ricky Ponting factor. Punjab Kings head coach Ponting shares a successful working relationship with Iyer from their time together at Delhi Capitals. The duo worked together when Delhi reached the IPL 2020 final, and Ponting understands the Indian batter’s leadership approach. This familiarity could play an important role in the franchise’s decision-making. Removing Iyer from captaincy immediately after a major player acquisition could also disturb an established leadership structure. Instead, Punjab might prefer to retain their existing captain and allow Hardik to concentrate on his all-round responsibilities.

Furthermore, Hardik’s recent fitness concerns could influence the decision. Reports have indicated that the all-rounder has been dealing with injuries since IPL 2026, making his availability and workload important considerations for the franchise.

3. Hardik and Iyer could share leadership responsibilities

Another possibility is that Punjab Kings decide against making an immediate captaincy change. Having two experienced IPL captains in the same dressing room could actually work in the franchise’s favour if their responsibilities are clearly defined.

Iyer could continue as the official captain, while Hardik could become one of his most influential on-field advisers. His experience of leading Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians would allow him to contribute valuable tactical inputs during crucial phases.

Hardik could also help manage the bowling resources and provide guidance to younger players, particularly during high-pressure situations. Such an arrangement would give Punjab the opportunity to benefit from both players’ leadership qualities without creating unnecessary uncertainty.

However, this approach would require mutual understanding between the two senior cricketers. Clear communication from Ponting and the management would be equally important to ensure that their roles do not overlap.

For now, Iyer remains Punjab Kings’ established captain, but Hardik’s potential arrival could put the leadership question firmly on the table. If the management wants a fresh direction, the all-rounder could get the opportunity to lead his third IPL franchise. Otherwise, Punjab could retain Iyer and use Hardik’s experience to build a stronger leadership group.
