Haze from forest and land fires in Indonesia’s Kalimantan region blanketed the Philippine capital on Tuesday (September 1), pushing air quality to “very unhealthy” and “acutely unhealthy” levels in some areas, according to the country's environmental bureau, prompting several local governments to suspend classes. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources–Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) said 11 of 15 monitoring stations in Metro Manila recorded “acutely unhealthy” PM2.5 readings, with Parañaque’s Don Bosco station hitting an AQI of 300—just one point below the “emergency” threshold.
