A country located on South America’s north-central coast between Venezuela and Suriname, the Co-operative Republic of Guyana shipped US$24.3 billion worth of exported products around the world in 2025.

That dollar amount results from a 472.8% acceleration compared to $4.24 billion 5 years earlier in 2021.

Year over year, the total value of Guyanese exports grew by 8.8% from $22.3 billion during 2024.

Best Guyanese Exports Partners

The latest available country-specific data shows that 87.9% of products exported from Guyana was bought by importers in: United States of America (27.6% of the Guyanese total), Belgium (15.9%), United Kingdom (9.7%), Panama (7.9%), Singapore (6.8%), Netherlands (5%), United Arab Emirates (2.9%), Italy (2.7%), Spain (2.6%), Poland (2.4%), Brazil (2.3%) and mainland China (2.1%).

From a continental perspective, 42.1% of Guyana’s exports by value was delivered to European countries while 29% was sold to importers in North America.

Guyana shipped another 14.1% worth of goods to buyers in Latin America excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean.

Smaller percentages went to customers in Asia (13.8%), Africa (0.9%) then Oceania (0.01%) mostly New Zealand and Australia.

Given Guyana’s population of 799,000 people, its total US$24.3 billion in 2025 exports translates to about $30,400 for every resident in the Latin American country. That per-capita dollar amount surpasses the average $28,200 one year earlier in 2024.

The following export product groups represent the highest dollar value in Guyanese global shipments during 2025. Also shown is the percentage share each export category represents in terms of overall exports from Guyana.

  1. Mineral fuels including oil: US$18.3 billion (75.5% of total exports)
  2. Gems, precious metals: $5.1 billion (21%)
  3. Cereals: $266.4 million (1.1%)
  4. Ores, slag, ash: $220.1 million (0.9%)
  5. Machinery including computers: $100 million (0.4%)
  6. Optical, technical, medical apparatus: $40.6 million (0.2%)
  7. Fish: $34.8 million (0.1%)

  9. Wood: $21.4 million (0.1%)
  10. Sugar, sugar confectionery: $18.8 million (0.1%)

Guyana’s top 10 exports accounted for 99.5% of the overall value of its global shipments.

Gems, precious metals: was the fastest grower among the top 10 export categories, up by 431.7% from 2024 to 2025.

In second place for improving export sales was ores, slag and ash via a 77% advance led by aluminum and manganese ores and concentrates.

Guyana’s shipments of optical, technical or medical apparatus posted the third-fastest gain in value, up by 26.2%.

The leading decliner among Guyana’s top 10 export categories was the machinery including computers group, thanks to a -44.8% year-over-year drop.

The above listed product groups are at the 2-digit Harmonized Tariff System (HTS) code level.

Drilling down to the more detailed 4-digit HTS codes, Guyana’s 10 biggest exports by value are crude oil (75.5% of the Guyanese total), unwrought gold (21%), rice (1.1%), aluminum ores and concentrates (0.8%), machinery parts (0.2%), manganese ores and concentrates (0.1%), whole frozen fish (0.1%), alcohol including spirits or liqueurs (0.1%), sugar (0.1%) then miscellaneous machinery (also 0.1%).

That cohort of 10 leading exports from Guyana accounted for 98.9% of money received for Guyana’s overall exports in 2025. Such a high percentage indicates a highly concentrated portfolio of exported products.

Products Generating Greatest Trade Surpluses for Guyana

In 2025 Guyana earned a US$14.4 billion surplus, reducing by -4.7% from -$15.1 billion in black ink for 2024.

The following types of Guyanese product shipments represent positive net exports or a trade balance surplus. Investopedia defines net exports as the value of a country’s total exports minus the value of its total imports.

In a nutshell, net exports represent the amount by which foreign spending on a home country’s goods or services exceeds or lags the home country’s spending on foreign goods or services.

  1. Mineral fuels including oil: US$17.4 billion (Up by 1.9% since 2024)
  2. Gems, precious metals: $5.1 billion (Up by 431.8%)
  3. Cereals: $227.5 million (Down by -4.7%)
  4. Ores, slag, ash: $210.8 million (Up by 85.9%)
  5. Fish: $32.4 million (Down by -26%)
  6. Wood: $4 million (Down by -71.9%)
  7. Woodpulp: $18,000 (Up by 100%)

Historically, Guyana generates highly positive net exports in the international trade of crude oil. In turn, these cashflows indicate Guyana’s strong competitive advantage under the mineral fuels-related category.

Products Causing Biggest Trade Deficits for Guyana

Below are exports from Guyana that result in negative net exports or product trade balance deficits. These negative net exports reveal product categories where foreign spending on home country Guyana’s goods trail Guyanese importer spending on foreign products.

  1. Ships, boats: -US$2.6 billion (Reversing a $203.4 million surplus for 2024)
  2. Machinery including computers: -$1.6 billion (Up by 16.1% since 2024)
  3. Articles of iron or steel: -$907.8 million (Up by 10.5%)
  4. Vehicles: -$654.2 million (Up by 31.2%)
  5. Electrical machinery, equipment: -$488.9 million (Up by 16.8%)
  6. Iron, steel: -$186.3 million (Up by 43.6%)
  7. Plastics, plastic articles: -$180.7 million (Up by 20.9%)
  8. Optical, technical, medical apparatus: -$156.3 million (Up by 6.7%)
  9. Salt, sulphur, stone, cement: -$150.1 million (Down by -9.3%)
  10. Furniture, bedding, lighting , signs, prefab buildings: -$107.3 million (Down by -1.8%)

Guyana has highly negative net exports and therefore deep international trade deficits under the capital-intensive product category ships and boats.

In macroeconomic terms, Guyana’s total exported goods represent 32.3% of its overall Gross Domestic Product for 2025 ($75.3 billion valued in Purchasing Power Parity US dollars). That 32.3% for exports to overall GDP in PPP for 2025 compares to 33.7% for 2024. Those percentages suggest a relatively decreasing reliance on products sold on international markets for Guyana’s total economic performance, albeit based on a short timeframe.

Another key indicator of a country’s economic performance is its unemployment rate. Guyana’s unemployment rate averaged 11.96% for 2025, up from an average 10.165% jobless rate one year earlier in 2024 according to Trading Economics statistics.

Guyana’s capital city is Georgetown.
