England have been dealt another major blow ahead of the second Test against New Zealand after fast bowler Ollie Robinson was ruled out with a knee problem. The experienced seamer will miss the crucial clash at The Oval after experiencing discomfort during training, leaving the hosts to reshuffle their pace attack at a time when several frontline bowlers are already unavailable.

Ollie Robinson to undergo further assessment

England confirmed that Robinson reported knee soreness during a training session in Hove and will undergo further medical evaluation. Although the injury has ruled him out of the upcoming Test, team management remains optimistic that the 32-year-old could recover in time for the third and final match of the series at Trent Bridge later this month.

Rather than sending him home immediately, England have retained Robinson with the squad so his condition can continue to be monitored over the coming days. The decision suggests the medical staff believe the issue may not require a lengthy layoff.

Henry Crocombe drafted in as cover

With Robinson unavailable, Sussex fast bowler Henry Crocombe has been added to the squad as cover. While yet to make his international debut, the left-arm seamer has impressed in domestic cricket and has featured regularly in England Lions setups. Crocombe has enjoyed a productive County Championship campaign, claiming 21 Division One wickets this season, and further enhanced his reputation with a four-wicket haul for the Lions against South Africa A earlier this month. His inclusion gives England another pace option as they prepare for a must-win encounter.

England’s pace resources stretched

Robinson’s absence compounds England’s selection headaches. The team is already without Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson, both unavailable because of disciplinary reasons, forcing the management to rethink its bowling combination. Robinson had only recently returned to the Test side and made an immediate impact at Lord’s, spearheading the attack with outstanding match figures of 7 for 77. Losing a bowler who was in such impressive form is a significant setback, particularly with New Zealand expected to challenge England’s depleted pace unit.

To strengthen their resources, England have recalled Jofra Archer following his commitments in the IPL. Matthew Fisher and Sonny Baker are also available, giving the selectors multiple options to fill the void left by Robinson.

A comeback interrupted by another fitness concern

Robinson’s latest setback continues a career that has frequently been interrupted by injuries. Despite taking 76 Test wickets at an impressive average before being dropped after the 2023-24 tour of India, fitness concerns have repeatedly hampered his progress. His previous Test appearance in Ranchi ended prematurely after a back injury limited his effectiveness, and he was subsequently left out of the national side. Determined to force his way back, Robinson worked extensively on his conditioning and accepted the role of Sussex’s red-ball captain before earning another opportunity with England.

That hard-earned return now faces another obstacle, although the team remains hopeful the knee problem is only temporary. If rehabilitation progresses well, Robinson could still feature in the third and final Test and provide England with a much-needed boost as they aim to finish the series strongly.
