The Karnataka unit of the Dalit Sangharsha Samiti has announced a Statewide rally on June 16, demanding a Cabinet berth for senior Congress leader and former Minister H.C. Mahadevappa in the proposed expansion of the Cabinet.

D.G. Sagar, Samiti State convener, addressing a press conference in Kalaburagi city on June 8, said that Dr. Mahadevappa had consistently worked for the welfare of Dalits, backward classes and minorities, and had played a key role in promoting social justice, educational advancement and constitutional values. He played a vital role in strengthening Dalit movements in Karnataka, and supporting initiatives aimed at safeguarding the rights of marginalised communities.

Dr. Sagar highlighted several measures undertaken during his tenure, including securing funds for completion of the Dr B.R. Ambedkar Bhavan in Mysuru, efforts to streamline scholarships for Dalit students, implementation of welfare schemes under the Scheduled Caste Sub-Plan (SCSP) and Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP), and steps to strengthen the enforcement of laws relating to atrocities against Scheduled Castes.

He also referred to programmes conducted by the State Government to promote constitutional values, including the Constitution Day human chain programme from Bidar to Chamarajanagar, and celebrations marking International Day of Democracy.

Demanding greater representation for Dalits in positions of power, the Samiti urged the State Congress leadership to accommodate Dr. Mahadevappa in the next phase of Cabinet expansion, and also provide adequate representation to Dalits and social activists in corporations, boards and in the Legislative Council.

As part of its campaign, the Samiti will hold rallies and demonstrations in all district headquarters across Karnataka on June 16.
