In more than 30 years of playing this game and teaching it as a Class A PGA professional, I can count on one hand the number of golfers I’ve met who actually know how to adjust their own driver. Most treat the hosel wrench like a mystery tool that came in the box for no reason.

That’s a shame because making a slight adjustment that helps you find more fairways or a few more yards is worth it.

The diagnostic chart

Here is a chart you can use to get started making adjustments to your driver. Make small adjustments while on the range, test them with a launch monitor if possible and try to analyze the effectiveness of the change.

A couple of things worth knowing before you touch the wrench:

Loft and face angle move together, not independently. Add loft on most modern hosels and you also close the face slightly which moves the ball flight toward a draw. Take loft off and the face opens, producing a fade. That’s true across Titleist’s SureFit, Callaway’s OptiFit and TaylorMade’s FCT sleeve, even though the exact numbers differ by brand.

Torque specs aren’t universal. Titleist’s GT-series wrench is spec’d at 30 in-lbs while most Callaway and TaylorMade sleeves spec 40 in-lbs. Use the wrench that came with your specific driver, tighten until it clicks.

Heel and toe weight work through more than just the center of gravity. Shifting weight toward the heel doesn’t just move the center of gravity; it also speeds up how fast the face rotates closed through impact. That’s why heel weight helps a slicer even beyond the center of gravity shift alone and why toe weight does the opposite for a hook.

Not every miss is a hosel problem. If your dispersion changes from round to round with no pattern or if you’re spinning the ball too much even at a normal loft setting, the fix isn’t in the sleeve. That’s an attack angle and delivery issue and it’s worth a session with a launch monitor before you start changing the settings on your driver.

Bottom line

The loft sleeve on your driver is one of the most underused tools in your bag. Match your miss to the chart above, make one change at a time and check it against a launch monitor or your own ball flight before you make another. The technology is built into your golf club. Use it.
