Nicknamed “The First State” and “The Diamond State” located in America’s Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern regions, Delaware shipped US$5.5 billion worth of exported products around the world in 2025.

That dollar amount grew by 5.2% from $5.23 billion four years earlier in 2022.

Year over year, the overall value of Delaware’s exported goods accelerated by 15.9% compared to $4.75 billion in 2024.

Delaware ranks as America’s 42nd biggest exporter by state far behind front-runners Texas, California, New York state, Louisiana, Illinois and Florida.

The value of Delaware’s exports equals 0.3% of the United States’ overall exported products for 2025, exceeding the 0.2% one year prior.

Delaware’s exported products represent 4.7% of the state’s total economic output or nominal Gross Domestic Product in 2025 ($117.2 billion) versus 4.6% for the prior year.

Given Delaware’s population of 1,059,952 people, its total US$5.5 billion in 2025 exports translates to roughly $5,200 for every resident in the First State. That dollar metric surpasses the average $4,500 per capita in 2024.

Delaware’s unemployment rate was 4.6% at the end of September 2026, down from 5.2% one year prior per YCharts.

The following export products represent the highest dollar value in Delaware global shipments during 2025. Also shown is the percentage share each export category represents in terms of overall exports from Delaware.

Figures are shown at the more granular six-digit Harmonized Tariff System code level, for more precise product identification.

  1. Miscellaneous medications for retail: US$593.5 million (10.8% of Delaware’s total exports)
  2. Ammunition including bombs, mines: $446.4 million (8.1%)
  3. Small portable computers: $291.6 million (5.3%)
  4. Parts for filtering or purifying machines: $165.4 million (3%)
  5. Civilian aircraft, full or engines or other parts: $159.5 million (2.9%)
  6. Miscellaneous plastic items: $142.1 million (2.6%)
  7. Mass spectrometers: $132.4 million (2.4%)
  8. Direct current (DC) motors, generators: $126 million (2.3%)
  9. Smartphones: $112.6 million (2%)
  10. Fried or dried bananas: $109 million (2%)

Delaware’s top 10 exports surpassed two-fifths (41.4%) of the overall value of the state’s global shipments.

Bombs, mines and other ammunition represent the fastest grower among the top 10 export categories, up by 292.3% from 2024 to 2025.

In second place for improving export sales were small portable computers via a 206.5% advance.

Delawarean exports of smartphones (up 150.5) recorded the third-fastest gain ahead of miscellaneous medications packaged for retail sale (up 53.9%) then miscellaneous items made from plastic (up 15%).

Decliners among Delaware’s top 10 export products were civilian aircraft fully assembled or aircraft parts (down -45.1% from 2024) and mass spectrometers (down -7.8%).

More Key Facts about Delaware’s International Trade

Overall, Delaware incurred a -US$4.9 billion deficit exporting and importing products during 2025. That dollar amount reflects a -17.2% decrease from -$5.9 billion in red ink for 2024.

Another way of saying surplus or deficit is positive or negative net exports. In a nutshell, the term “net exports” quantifies the amount by which foreign spending on a state’s goods or services exceeds or lags that same state’s spending on foreign goods or services.

Below are Delaware’s top 10 import products highlighting the state’s highest spending on foreign-made goods in 2025.

  1. Crude petroleum oils: US$2.6 billion (25.4% of Delaware’s total imports)
  2. Lead-acid batteries: $403 million (3.9%)
  3. Medications containing cortex hormones: $395.1 million (3.8%)
  4. Electric individual-function machinery, appliances: $377.3 million (3.6%)
  5. Fried or dried bananas: $362.3 million (3.5%)
  6. Heterocyclics including nucleic acids, salts: $280.7 million (2.7%)
  7. Photovoltaic cells in modules, panels: $200.2 million (1.9%)
  8. Paintings, drawings, pastels (under 100 years): $187.9 million (1.8%)
  9. Miscellaneous medications for retail: $123.7 million (1.2%)
  10. Non-monetary gold: $108.7 million (1%)

Delaware has highly negative net exports in the international trade of crude petroleum oils. In turn, these cashflows indicate Delaware’s competitive disadvantages under this product category.
