Costa Rica is targeting a major expansion in STEM education with plans to launch at least 10 new scientific high schools.

President Laura Fernández announced the initiative during International Youth Day at the Legislative Assembly, emphasizing that the specialized schools aim to foster careers in innovation, technology, and mathematics while broadening job market access for youth.

Minister of Education Leonardo Sánchez confirmed early progress during the administration’s 100-day report, highlighting approved expansion plans for Heredia, Turrialba, and Nicoya.

Key Expansion Details & Campus Network

New Heredia Campus: The National University (UNA) Omar Dengo campus will welcome its inaugural scientific high school class in 2027, with admissions currently underway.

Public University Partnerships: Scientific high schools operate directly within public university campuses.

UNED Support: The State Distance University (UNED) currently hosts 7 of the nation’s 14 scientific schools across Limón, Alajuela, San Vito, Upala, Parrita, Puriscal, and Los Santos.

Technical Education Pivot: Alongside new scientific schools, the government plans to convert 50 standard academic high schools into technical high schools.

Admission Requirements for Applicants
