With the goal of shielding the national power grid during the dry season and diversifying its renewable generation sources, the Coopeguanacaste cooperative is moving forward with the Abangares Solar Photovoltaic Project. This initiative stands as one of the most ambitious solar energy infrastructure developments in the country, boosting the socioeconomic development of the Guanacaste province.

Costa Rica continues taking firm steps toward the decarbonization of its economy and the strengthening of its energy security. With the development of the new Abangares Solar Photovoltaic Park, led by the Rural Electrification Cooperative of Guanacaste (Coopeguanacaste R.L.), the country aims to maximize the use of North Pacific natural resources for clean electricity generation.

Strategically located in the canton of Abangares—an area characterized by high levels of solar radiation year-round—the project will contribute dozens of megawatts to the regional and national power grid, directly benefiting over 85,000 families and commercial subscribers affiliated with the cooperative.

“This project reflects our ongoing commitment to sustainability and energy autonomy. Guanacaste is not only the country’s tourism engine, but also the capital of renewable energy in Costa Rica,” noted Coopeguanacaste representatives.

Developing large-scale solar parks addresses the urgent need to complement the country’s hydroelectric generation. Historically, Costa Rica has relied heavily on water to generate electricity; however, climate events such as El Niño and prolonged droughts have exposed the vulnerability of this source during the first months of the year.

The solar park in Abangares offers key advantages for the national energy matrix:

• Complementary Generation: Solar energy production reaches its peak during the dry, hot months (December through April), precisely when river flows and hydroelectric reservoir levels drop.
• Matrix Diversification: Reduces reliance on fossil fuel imports for backup thermal power plants, lowering both environmental impact and utility rate costs for consumers.
• Carbon Footprint Reduction: Prevents the emission of thousands of tons of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) per year, aligning with Costa Rica’s National Decarbonization Plan.

The construction and implementation of the solar park represents not only a technical milestone, but also an economic reactivation driver for Abangares and neighboring communities:

1. Job Creation: During the development and photovoltaic panel installation phases, the project generates direct and indirect employment for local labor in construction, engineering, and electrical installation fields.
2. Cutting-Edge Technology: The facility incorporates high-efficiency photovoltaic panels and solar tracking systems that optimize radiation capture throughout the day, alongside state-of-the-art inverters to ensure grid stability.
3. Community Investment: Under a cooperative business model, project surpluses and positive impacts are redistributed into public services, community projects, and power supply quality improvements for local residents.

With the commissioning of this infrastructure, Costa Rica reaffirms its regional leadership in adopting 100% renewable energy sources. Integrating solar power alongside wind, geothermal, and hydroelectric power solidifies Guanacaste as a clean energy innovation hub, attracting attention from international investors and environmental organizations.
