Coal India shares soared over 4 per cent on Wednesday, defying weak market sentiment, after the company reported a 5.5 per cent increase in total coal supplies in August FY2026–27.The stock closed 4.05 per cent positive at ₹417.85, hitting an high of ₹422.40 compared with its previous close of ₹401.60.

The company increased its total coal supplies to 60.60 million tonnes (MT) in August FY 2026–27, compared with 57.40 MT supplied during the corresponding month last year.

Coal supplies to the power sector rose 4.5 per cent during the month to 48.46 MT, compared with 46.39 MT in August FY 2025–26.

Supplies to the non-regulated sector (NRS) registered growth of 9.6 per cent, rising to 12.12 MT in August FY 2026–27 from 11.06 MT in August last year.

Coal India’s total coal supplies during the first five months of FY 2026–27, till August, reached 322.90 MT, compared with 302.60 MT during the corresponding period of the previous year, registering growth of 6.70 per cent.

The higher supplies also enabled Coal India to liquidate around 55 MT of pithead coal stocks during the first five months of FY 2026–27. With approximately 76 MT of coal currently available at its pitheads, CIL has sufficient inventory to support power generation requirements in the coming months.

As the intense rainy spells gradually recede and drier months approach, the company is preparing itself to ramp up both production and supplies.

In a separate stock exchange filing, the company said the draft red herring prospectus of its wholly owned subsidiary Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) was filed with SEBI, BSE and NSE.

The proposed IPO comprises an offer for sale of up to 661,836,300 equity shares with a face value of ₹2 each, held by Coal India. The IPO remains subject to applicable approvals, prevailing market conditions and other relevant considerations.
