Canadian capital for food technology companies largely dries up past the seed stage, causing founders to tap foreign investors for larger cheques at later stages and moving their economic benefits abroad, says a new study from the Canadian Food Innovation Network (CFIN).

Canadian foodtech companies raised $52.9 million in private capital across 10 disclosed equity deals in the first half of 2026, but the two largest deals — Miraterra Technologies Corp.’s $16-million and NS/TX Industries Inc.’s $14.7-million fundraises — were led by investors from the United States and Europe. Not one Canadian investor led a foodtech round at a Series A or beyond, according to the CFIN report released Tuesday.

Domestic investors, such as Spring Impact Capital Management Inc., NYA Ventures Inc. and Nàdarra Ventures, were active participants and lead investors in seed rounds valued at $1 million to $4 million, but they largely disappeared past that threshold.

“That shows Canada has a strong enough base to help many companies get started, but the gap becomes much more visible when they need capital to build facilities, expand production, hire teams and move into commercial scale,” Dana McCauley, chief executive of CFIN, said.

This mirrors a broader trend of Canadian startups struggling to scale due to difficulties in securing the capital, expertise and early domestic customers required to grow.

As a result, Canada is “systematically” losing promising homegrown startups to foreign buyers, a report earlier this month by the Council of Canadian Innovators said.

The technology advocacy group also said government investment in innovation produces early results, but Canadian startups are pushed to foreign investors at the scale-up stage that could turn into a foreign acquisition.

McCauley said Canadian companies relying on foreign investors to grow mean they are more likely to move abroad, shift decision-making outside Canada and move their economic upside — from taxes and job creation — with them.

The CFIN report also said funding for foodtech companies is concentrated in the areas of food manufacturing, food safety and traceability and next-generation food and ingredients rather than consumer-facing apps and services such as delivery platforms, which have dominated foodtech for years.

Food manufacturing tech received 41.4 per cent of the total funding, or $26 million, in the first half, followed by the $16.9 million raised by food-safety companies and $15.8 million by next-generation food and ingredient businesses.

McCauley said trade disruptions have prioritized the need to fix Canada’s reliance on other countries for its food supply chain through technology and redirect funding to segments such as food manufacturing tech.

“Productivity, labour availability, processing capacity, food security and supply chain resilience are all putting greater emphasis on technologies that can improve how food is produced, processed and moved,” she said.
