Canadian negotiators have remained in Washington, D.C., this weekend in what has turned into a last-second bid to reach a trade deal with the U.S. that would avoid new tariffs on Aug. 19. A spokesperson for the minister responsible for Canada-U.S. trade said Dominic LeBlanc would meet with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer Monday afternoon. In a statement, LeBlanc’s office said the meeting would “take stock” of the work done by respective teams and what lies ahead as both sides strive toward a comprehensive deal. Meanwhile, Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre has said any deal must remove tariffs on Canadian softwood lumber. Global’s Mackenzie Gray has been following the talks and has the latest.
