It is often said the World Cup does not start until Brazil make their entrance so there was plenty of interest as the five-time champions took on Morocco in New Jersey on June 13.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side endured a disappointing qualification campaign but still advanced to maintain their record of having played in every edition of the global showpiece.

They could have asked for an easier opening as they faced African champions Morocco at MetLife Stadium.

The Atlas Lions were seventh in the world rankings – one place behind Brazil – and reached the semi-finals in Qatar four years ago.

• Mohamed Ouahbi will be Morocco’s head coach at the 2026 World Cup, replacing Walid Regragui; he led the U20 side at the 2025 U20 World Cup, beating Argentina 2-0 in the final in Santiago, Chile.
