Anthropic said on Friday that the US government had told the company it could restore access to one of its most powerful AI tools for select US organisations.

Earlier this month, the Trump administration issued a directive banning foreign nationals - including Anthropic employees - from using the AI firm's Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models, citing national security concerns.
In response, Anthropic said it would have to shut off access to all customers in order to comply with the order.
But on Friday, Anthropic announced that after "working closely" with the government since 12 June, it had received the green light to rerelease Mythos 5 to certain organisations.
"Today, the government notified us that Mythos 5, our strongest cybersecurity model, can be redeployed to a set of US organizations that operate and defend critical infrastructure," it said in a statement.
"We’re restoring access for these organizations quickly, and we’re continuing to work with the government to expand access to Mythos 5 and make Fable 5 available for general use again," it added.
The US's decision to block Mythos and Fable earlier this month had sparked serious concerns among EU officials.
Responding to the news at the time, Benjamin Haddad, the French minister delegate for Europe, called for Europe to "invest more, support its innovators, and equip itself with the means to master the technologies that will determine power in the 21st century".
"Europe cannot settle for being an open market dependent on technologies designed, funded, and controlled elsewhere," he said.
